'Data asset' in its myriad forms is ever increasing in its quantum. The current statistics reported by Data Management Association International indicate that nearly 5 exabytes of new information is added every year in the world. An Exabyte is a billion gigabytes or 10 18 bytes. This statistic holds true proportionately for the Oil and Gas industry as well. With the volume of information on a perpetual increase it does not come as a surprise that 80% of decision making time is spent gathering the requisite data. Further compounding the problem of data management and timely access is the interoperability issue. Addressing the need in the upstream Oil and Gas industry to manage data from Pipelines, periodical inspection reports, Well logs, Site surveys, Seismic sections and various other maps and drawings, we offer the GEM Solution. GEM is an integration framework to manage spatial data and documents along with other data, residing in different data repositories. GEM provides a user friendly "one window" access from within the Geographical Information System (GIS) domain, to both spatial and textual data from various E & P data repositories. It enables the GIS user to model multiple documents as a GIS entity. This adds strength to the spatial elements enabling reverse queries based on document meta data or attributes leading to a spatial features result set. For example, with GEM it is possible to query and select all the weld inspection reports associated with the 14 inch pipelines situated within a 20 metres distance from an anchor scar or find out relevant QC reports nearest to a specific KP. GEM can be customized to tightly integrate with virtually any corporate data management systems such as Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS) and Electronic Document Management System (EDMS). Integration of GEM with EDMS conjoins the EDMS functions like document access control, workflows, versioning, meta data recording and lineage with the GIS capabilities of performing complex spatial queries and analysis. GEM being an indigenously developed solution, offers complete configuration flexibility and can be further customized for extending its functionalities. GEM is completely scalable and can be configured to make optimum use of the client existing hardware and software set-up thus protecting previous infrastructural investments. |
